Frequently Asked Questions

I want to replace my benchtop hotplate but the new one is bigger; can my bench be cut?

Yes, it can be cut but before you do, you need to consider the type of benchtop you have. Laminate or wooden materials are normally easy to alter but if your benchtop is a stone material, then there may be issues with hairline cracks that cannot be seen by the human eye. They can still be cut but there is a risk that the cutting process may cause or exasperate existing hairline cracks and then, over time, these may spread or expand and thus crack through, leaving you with the need to replace the whole bench top. For materials such as granite, stone, (including Essa), we advise owners that any cutting is done at their own risk and that finding a stove top to fit the existing opening is best.

My fridge doesn’t have a water dispenser, so I want to buy one that does. Can you do the plumbing?

In most cases this can be done but it does depend on the structure of your building and the accessibility to ceiling cavities etc., so we would need to do an onsite inspection before confirming.

I do not have a dishwasher in my kitchen. Can one be put one in and how?

It depends on the available space in your kitchen. Keep in mind that you may need to sacrifice some cupboard space and there will probably be some cupboard alterations needed. We will also need to do some plumbing works, which will include water and waste connection, and possibly install a power point to power the dishwasher. An onsite inspection will provide an accurate assessment.

We had a blackout and now most of our appliances are not working, what do I do?

This is a frequent occurrence but luckily we have been doing insurance replacements for years and can make the whole process a lot less stressful for you. The first thing to do is see if your appliances were saved by the safety switch that should have been installed in your electrical power board. This will be a relief if it is a flick of the switch. If not, then call us at Powerstate Services on 1300 211 401 and we will come out to inspect and provide an inspection report for you insurance company. We do charge a call out fee of $110.00 but this is deducted from your installation invoice when we later install your new appliances.

I need extra power points in my home is this something Powerstate can do?

Yes, we can.

I want to replace my 600mm wall oven with a 900mm one instead, can this be done?

This can usually be done, once we make some alterations to your kitchen cupboards. However, it is highly recommended that we do an onsite inspection to ensure this is the best option for your kitchen. If you email us photos of your existing wall oven and the surrounding cupboards, we can provide an estimated quote but no works would commence until we have visited your site and made sure there are no hidden obstacles that were not obvious in the photos.

I want to upgrade my 600mm upright electric cooktop and stove to a 900mm dual fuel oven, can this be done?

Yes, this can be done but it will incur the cost of installing the complaint gas works and any necessary alterations to surrounding cupboards. This is not an easy job, but we at Powerstate Services have done it many a times. This work will require a onsite inspection.

How do I know what size split system air conditioner I need for my home?

The first thing you need to consider when buying a split system air conditioner is the size of the space you are wanting to cool and/or heat. Buying the right size is really important because if you purchase a small one for a large space then it won’t cool the area and if you purchase an air conditioner that is too big you will be using much more energy than required and the space may be too cool or hot and the room temperature will not be comfortable.

Here is a guide to some room sizes versus split system air conditioner sizes for your consideration.

Room Size

Type of Room in the Home

Air Conditioner Size

Small           (up two 20m2)

Small Bedroom, study, kitchen

2kw – 2.5kw

Meduim      (20m2 to 40m2)

Medium Bedroom, lounge, kitchen

2.5kw – 5kw

Large            (40m2 to 60m2)

Large bedroom, mid-size lounge, large kitchen

4kw – 6kw

Extra Large (60+m2)

Open plan areas and large lounge

6kw – 9kw

How do I know what is needed for my new air conditioner to be installed?

Firstly, you need to consider where the external motor, (compressor), will need to be located. Ideally, that would be as close to the internal head unit as possible, in order to avoid the cost of extra copper piping, cabling and conduit, but unfortunately, that may not always be possible. An onsite inspection is recommended to attain the best estimate, as there could be other variations needed that will also add to the cost of your air conditioner install. For example, brick home, double storey versus single storey, wiring of a new circuit with a protective device, lifting of roof sheets and replacement and accessibility.

IMPORTANT NOTE: For air conditioners to be compliant to Australian Standards, they must be installed on their own dedicated circuit and with a protected device.

Can I change my boxed air conditioner to a split system air conditioner?

Yes, however, please be aware that it will not be able to go in the same place unless the old wall cavity is filled in and restored first.

What is a Certificate of Compliance and do I need one?

A COC (certificate of compliance) is a legal document that is required under the Electricity Act 1996 and Plumbers, Gas Fitters and Electricians Act 1995 and only people with the appropriate licence can legally fill them out. It needs to be given to you on completion of your works as proof that the job was carried out by a qualified tradesperson and to the industry standard. The trades person has 30 days to complete your certificate of compliance for their work. Electricians, Plumbers and Gas fitting works in South Australia should be certified using an electronic certificate of compliance or eCoC. A COC is required by appliance manufacturers for your warranty to be valid and if you don’t have a COC the manufacturer will assume you did not have your appliance installed by a certified trades person and your warranty will be void. So, if you don’t receive one, ask for one!

How do I pay for my services?

Powerstate Services accepts cash, credit card or direct bank transfer. All bookings are made online or through our office and full payment is required upon booking your installation. If you are not sure on the additional extras you can call our office or head technician and your job can be discussed. If you book a standard install, on the day prior to commencement of works our technician will ensure that you are advised of any extra charges before commencement of works. The additional extras will need to be paid to our technician on completion of the job and on the day.

How long is the warranty on completed works?

Powerstate Services guarantee ALL of our installation works for 12 months from date of installation completion. Should anything go wrong with the appliance itself, please refer to your appliance manufacturer’s warranty, as these vary a great deal. If you are not sure, then contact your retailer where you purchased the appliance or the manufacturer direct. You may have chosen to buy an extended warranty from your retailer but please keep in mind that this only covers the appliance and not the installation of it.
